SMP Law – Update on Virtual Wills

On June 19, 2020, SMP Law posted a video called “Wills and Covid-19” and described how we could do a virtual witnessing of wills and powers of attorney. As of February 16, 2021, it appears that the Government of Ontario is proposing amendments to virtual wills and power of attorney.

Allowing Virtual Witnessing of Wills and Powers of Attorney

The proposed amendments would now make virtual witnessing of wills and powers of attorney a permanent option. Witnesses would need to include at least one licensed paralegal or lawyer in Ontario.

If you would like to read more about the Government of Ontario‘s proposed changes, check out their update posted on February 16, 2021.

This is an exciting potential change as it creates many more opportunities for getting a will done. SMP Law has posted about the importance of estate planning and having a will “Plan Ahead“. Having the option to organize your will virtually permanently may help ease some of the challenges in organizing a will.
