Shawn Philbert, lawyer at SMP Law attended the recent international conference in September 2025, hosted by the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC) on Advanced Issues in Child Custody. It was a 4-day conference with excellent speakers from all over the world.

In January 2025, Shawn Philbert of SMP Law completed training in Parent-Child Contact Problems. This training provided a review the foundations of interpersonal and family dynamics, including human development, child temperament, and challenges that stem from special concerns such as family violence, substance use and misuse, and other internal and external factors.

Custody reversal refers to the removal of children from one parent into the sole custody of the other parent – either temporarily or permanently. This court ordered decision can occur for a variety of reasons, one of them being in severe cases of parental alienation.

The term reunification therapy has become increasingly popular in family law cases. Reunification therapy is essentially a therapeutic process designed to rebuild and repair a relationship between a parent and a child, usually due to a form of alienation by the other parent.
